Come explore the natural and cultural history of what the renowned conservation biologist the late Dr. William Niering called ‘the finest wild area in Connecticut. We’ll learn about Barn Island’s coastal forest and saltmarshes including some of the seminal saltmarsh restoration and research conducted here. We’ll also learn the story of Venture Smith (1729-1805), an original American hero, African captive and American slave who bought his freedom partly by farming land within what is today the Barn Island Wildlife Management Area.
