South Bronx Paddle

Havina Basil, a senior at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics, paddles with fellow members of Rocking the Boat’s summer Environmental Science Program during a summer trip on the Bronx River near Hunts Point Riverside Park. The Bronx teenager wants to be an environmental scientist. The boat, the Night Owl, was built by Rocking the Boat youth.

Rocking the Boat, which is 20-years old, empowers young people from the South Bronx to develop the self-confidence to set ambitious goals and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves. Learn more here.
