Project will deliver the final design and permitting plans that will lay the groundwork for shovel-ready installations at the sites, which will reduce the amount of nitrogen from these unsewered residences that could enter the Long Island Sound.

Engage 25 students in project design and 200 people in environmental education to construct a 22,000 square foot green infrastructure schoolyard at IS 224, HS 334, and MS 343 in the South Bronx, New York. Project will enhance school and community environmental education and outdoor recreational space in an underserved community and store 1.7 million gallons of stormwater through the use of expanded water capture, preventing the runoff into local waterways.

Enhancing Coastal Resiliency with Tidal Marsh Restoration at Crab Meadow Marsh

Work with the Town of Huntington and Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct biological and hydrological assessments of the marsh, run models, complete permits and develop 100 percent design for the priority Crab Meadow Marsh in Huntington, New York. Project will produce a permit-ready 100 percent restoration design for the marsh, which will lay the groundwork to implement resilience efforts that protect coastal habitat for shorebirds and the local communities.

Final Design and Planning for Implementing Eco-moorings/Seagrass Area Buoys on Fishers Island

Create the final design and placement plan for the implementation of eco-moorings and seagrass area buoys on Fishers Island alongside the development of a comprehensive, community-based social marketing plan in order to ensure community engagement and involvement. Project will create two plans that set the stage for the implementation of the eco-moorings and seagrass area buoys that will protect eelgrass from disturbance and support shorebird habitat.

Building Capacity for Green Infrastructure Stewardship in the Flushing Waterways

Implement a two-pronged approach for improving green infrastructure maintenance efforts in Corona and Flushing, New York, for 800 community members. Project will build the internal capacity to expand the rain garden maintenance program model into Flushing and develop a pilot partnership with a RAIN Coalition workforce development partner to leverage the watershed as a green job training ground.

Educating Bronx Communities on Floatable Trash Collection and Prevention

Engage residents along the Bronx River in hands-on conservation through on-water and on-land trash collection and education on water-borne trash issues impacting the Bronx River and greater Long Island Sound. Project will remove 11,600 pounds of marine debris from the Bronx River and reach 35,740 people through cleanup events, educational materials and outreach campaigns to provide education on how to prevent floatable trash from entering the river and impairing habitat.

Engaging Community Stewards to Manage Trails in Pelham Bay Park

Integrate the established Estuary Explorers STEM-based education program into the Castle Hill YMCA’s annual multi-week summer camp and organize 46 Coastal Clean-ups that engage the 380 community members in the Bronx, New York. Project will facilitate direct engagement of participants with the local waterfront and remove 375 pounds of marine debris through cleanup events, fostering experiential learning and hands-on stewardship activities of the Long Island Sound.

Reef Raisers and Meadow Makers: Inspiring Young Stewards through Classroom Restoration Programs

Engage students through the Reef Raisers + Meadow Makers program providing students with the unique opportunity to care for tanks of spat-on-shell oysters deployed to bolster existing oyster reef restoration projects and complete coastal plant propagation activities. Project will educate 300 students on the significance of coastal and marine ecosystems and inspire a new generation of stewards of the Long Island Sound.

Stewarding the Sound: Building Capacity for Community-based Stewardship of New York City Parks

Collaborate with community partners to expand the Super Steward/NAVigator network, building capacity for 30 community members and four local community organizations to plan and host volunteer events to care for the maritime forests of Udall’s Cove Park Preserve, Pugsley Creek Park Preserve and Soundview Park in New York. Project will develop long-term management plans for three community organizations, laying the foundation for sustainable local stewardship capacity.
