Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets, which is close to Flushing Bay, a tidal embayment that empties into the East River and #LISound, has eliminated plastic straws at its concession stands. The number one item found on #LISound beaches, according to International Coastal Cleanup data, is cigarette butts. Did you know the filters in cigarettes are made of plastic? Port Washington on Long Island’s North Shore is trying a new way to get smokers to stop throwing them on the ground, which can end up in the harbor and the Sound. Long Island Sound communities are doing their share to fix the plastic waste problem on our beaches and #LISound. One county and 17 towns (i.e. cities, villages, and towns), have passed laws to ban single-use plastic bags; another 18 are contemplating similar laws, according to Citizens Campaign for the Environment. Communities are also passing laws to ban Styrofoam packaging, single-use straws, and balloon releases. NY and CT are also starting bans. But you don’t need a law to do your share to Break the #SingleUsePlastic habit. Bring your own bag to the grocery store and your own bag or bottle to the beach. Encourage your neighbors to do the same. #DontTrashLISound.

Each year the Long Island Sound Study develops a Work Plan as part of the National Estuary Program that outlines the work being done with EPA funds to help achieve the goals of the Study’s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan. The 2019 Work Plan describes LISS activities planned with 2019 federal funding for Oct. 1, 2019 to Sept. 30, 2020. It also highlights projects undertaken from Oct.1, 2018 to Sept.30, 2019 with 2018 federal fiscal funds.

According to an article in Yale University’s e360 online magazine, some of the most dangerous items seabirds eat are balloons and fragments, which could be made of latex, foil, or plastic. This April, environmentalists from Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ and NJDFW rescued an American Oystercatcher entangled in a fishing line on a New Jersey beach. The plastic monofilament fiber used by anglers can be deadly for many coastal birds. Anglers should look for monofilament recycling bins available at some piers.
