Sound Stewards

Since 2010 the Long Island Sound Study’s Sound Steward Program has provided students with opportunities to learn about coastal ecology on Long Island Sound Stewardship Sites. Here, Vicky O’Neill, the New York habitat restoration coordinator for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Long Island Sound Study, holds a horseshoe crab molt at Sunken Meadow State Park in Long Island, while explaining the life history of the horseshoe crab to students at Sachem North High School. O’Neill and the students were seining and beach combing within the salt marsh. They were looking at and discussing the animals that were found in the net and along the shoreline.
