A piping plover on a beach at Sandy Point in New Haven, The piping plover is a migratory bird that nests along the Long Island Sound coast from May to June. The bird is listed as a federally threatened species, a state threatened species in Connecticut, and endangered species in New York. Care is taken every spring by resource managers and volunteers to educate the public about the need to protect the plover’s beach habit. The photo was taken by Jack Silky, a LISS communications intern who is shooting photos and videos at Stewardship Areas such as Sandy Point for the Long Island Sound Stewardship Online Atlas (www.LisStewardshipAtlas.net.)
