Planting a Tidal Wetland

Stratford picture

Students from Sacred Heart University planted cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) in front of concrete  reef balls in June at a former gun club at  Stratford Point in Stratford, CT. The reef balls are designed to reduce the energy of waves hitting the coast during severe storms before it could damage the newly restored habitat. The pilot “Living Shoreline” project was funded in 2013 with a grant from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund. Photo by Jack Silky.
